About Me

I am a Doctoral Researcher in Data Science working at the intersection of intervention modeling, policy analytics, and sustainable development. My research focuses on moving beyond descriptive dashboards towards prescriptive, stability-aware policy support systems that aid policymakers translate data into actionable, context-sensitive interventions.

27 November 2025 Prof. Ricardo Baeza-Yates from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden visited IIITB and gave a talk on “The Limitations of Data, Machine Learning and Us”. He also visited the WSL along with Dr. Shalini Urs and interacted with the research scholars.

24 November 2025 Pooja Bassin presented Samvaad Talk on her research work titled “Representation and Intervention Modeling for Sustainable Development Goals”.

11 Oct 2025. Shri Shoyabahmed Kalal, Director, State Support Mission at NITI Aayog, visited the LKI centre at IIIT Bangalore to review its progress.

4 September 2025 Arpitha Srivathsa Malavalli presented the paper, “Engineering Resilience: An Energy-Based Approach to Sustainable Behavioural Interventions” at the 22nd European Conference on Multi-Agent Systems (EUMAS 2025) in online mode.

25-27 August 2025 Dr. Apurva Kulkarni presented the paper, “From Dashboards to Do-Boards: A Data-driven Architecture for Policy Support Systems” at the The 14th International Conference on Electronic Government and the Information Systems Perspective (EGOVIS) in Bangkok, Thailand. Proceedings for EGOVIS 2025.

8 July 2025. Pooja Bassin presented Open Seminar for her PhD thesis titled “Representation and Intervention Modeling for Sustainable Development Goals”.

27 Feb 2025. WSL hosted a visit by Dame Wendy Hall and Prof. Noshir Contractor from the Web Science Trust who interacted with the research scholars.

15 Feb 2025. WSL hosted a delegation from the NITI for States team– an integrated platform NITI Aayog designed to foster learning, sharing, and action towards a “Viksit Bharat”.

2024

17 Nov 2024 Pooja Bassin attended the ‘Navigating India’s Climate Future: Launch of a Climate Data Set for India‘ event at the Bangalore International Centre organized by Azim Premji University. Prof. Rajeevan Madhavan Nair former secretary, MoES India and Prof. VK Dadhwal, former director Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, ISRO were part of a panel discussion involving topics on climate change, environment, policy & regulation, and sustainability.

3-9 Aug 2024 Pooja Bassin presented the paper ‘Design of a Data-driven Intervention Dashboard for SDG Localization‘ at the 33rd International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI’24) held at Jeju Island, South Korea.

10 June 2024 Workshop on Web Science for Development (WS4D) was successfully conducted at IIITB. The theme of the workshop was Digital Public Infrastructures.

16 May 2024 Apurva Kulkarni, Pooja Bassin, and Abraham G K participated in a meeting at the Vidhana Soudha (seat of the state cabinet) in Bengaluru, organized by the Directorate on Economics and Statistics (DES) and presented their work on Karnataka Data Lake pilot site.

23 & 29 Mar 2024 Posters related to Consent Management, Gramma-Kannada, Scenario Search for Vehicular Traffic, and Web Science for Development were presented at the RISE Open House and Research Colloquium.

14 Feb 2024 The vision group meeting of the mobility group of the BeST – Bengaluru Science & Technology Cluster on megaregional mobility around Bengaluru was jointly conducted by Web Science Lab and BeST Cluster at IIIT-Bangalore.

08-09 Dec 2023 Pooja Bassin presented the paper titled “Representation and Intervention Constructs for SDG Localisation” at the 1st International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications in Environmental, Social and Governance (AIESG) organised by Data Centre & Analytics Lab (DCAL) at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB).

19 Sept 2023 Pooja Bassin presented a poster on “Addressing Modelling Challenges for SDG Localisation” at the 11th Annual International Conference on Sustainable Development under the theme ‘The Digital Age’ held online Sept 18-20, 20234.

25 Aug 2023. Arpitha Malavalli and Sowmith Nandan presented a poster. They gave a demonstration on our paper titled “Modelling the Impact of Policy Interventions for Sustainable Development” at the IJCAI 2023 conference held in Macao.

12 April 2023 Pooja Bassin successfully presented her PhD thesis proposal in the State of the Art talk titled “Representation and Intervention Modelling for Sustainable Development Goals”.

18 March 2023 Pooja Bassin presented her research on “Intervention Modelling for Sustainable Development” as part of the Research Scholars Colloquium at WS4D 2023.

24 Feb 2023 Pooja Bassin presented the work on Karnataka Data Lake under the “Decisions with Data” theme at RISE 2023.

5 Jan 2023 Pooja Bassin, Niharika Sri Parasa, and Kalpana Subbaramappa visited MS Building to meet government officials including nodal officers to gain feedback for the ongoing Karnataka Data Lake project.

Naman Churiwala

Naman Churiwala is a Research Assistant at Web Science Lab, IIIT Bangalore. He holds a B.Tech in Material Science from IIT Kanpur. His research interests include Computer Vision in Medical Images, Speech Recognition and Knowledge Graphs.

He has one year of industry experience at Quantiphi Analytics, where he worked on Medical Image Classification, Automated Drug Discovery, and Toxicity Prediction of Molecules.

Anurag Mohanty

Anurag is a MS Research (Part-time) Student at Web Science Lab, IIT- Bangalore. His research interests are in Cognitive computing, Semantic analysis, NLP,  Knowledge Representation and Reasoning methods, Knowledge and Learning systems.

He has around 16 years of working Industry Experience in Software Development, Solution Architecture, Machine Learning and Data Science. He is currently working as a Data Scientist in IBM Pvt. Ltd. His prior formal education background includes B.E. in Computer Science and MBA (Finance).

Sharath Srivatsa is a MS by Research (part-time) student at Web Science Lab. He has Bachelor’s degree in Information Science and Engineering from B.M.S. College of Engineering, Bangalore. He has 12 years of work experience in software development using Web Technologies and from past 3 years he is working in Data Analytics projects with current employer. He has worked on Sentiment Analysis using Natural Language Processing (NLP), Web Crawlers and Big Data. Jaya Appukuttan

Jaya is a PhD (part-time) student at Web Science Lab. She holds a M.Tech in Computer & Information Science and B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering from Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT), Cochin. She has been working at the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), Bangalore since 2009. She has worked on the design and development of systems based on Natural Language Text Processing and Knowledge Management technologies. Currently she is working on semantic summarization from user generated text reports. Her research interests include: Natural Language Text Processing with emphasis on Information Extraction and summarization, Knowledge Representation and Machine Learning.

I am pursuing research from International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore. I am interested in Information Retrieval, Data mining, Modelling real world data.

I have worked in Manipal Institute of Technology as Assistant professor for 2.5 years. I completed my masters from IIIT Bangalore specializing in database and information systems.

Srinath Srinivasa

Srinath Srinivasa heads the Web Science lab and is the Dean (R&D) at the International Institute of Information Technology – Bangalore (IIITB), India. Srinath holds a Ph.D (magna cum laude) from the Berlin Brandenburg Graduate School for Distributed Information Systems (GkVI) Germany, an M.S. (by Research) from Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IITM) and B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering from The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) Mysore, India. His research interests are in the area of Web Science– understanding how the WWW is affecting humanity; and how the web can enable social empowerment and capability building. Srinath has participated in several initiatives for technology enhanced education including the Edusat program by the Vishveshwaraiah Technological University, The National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), a Switzerland based online MBA school called Educatis, and IIITB’s educational outreach program with Upgrad.  He has served on various technical and organizational committees for international conferences like International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM), ACM Hypertext, International Conference on Management of Data and Data Science (COMAD/CoDS), International conference on Ontologies, Databases and Applications of Semantics (ODBASE), International Conference on Big Data Analytics (BDA), ACM Web Science, etc. As part of academic community outreach, Srinath has served on the Board of Studies of Goa University, Christ University, and as a member of the Academic Council of the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore. He has served as a technical reviewer for various journals like the VLDB journal, ACM Computing Surveys, Springer AI Ethics, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing. He has also served as an Associate Editor of the journal Sadhana from the Indian Academy of Sciences. Srinath is also the recipient of various national and international grants and awards, from foundations and companies like: EU Horizon 2020, UK Royal Academy of Engineering, Research Councils UK, MEITy, DST, Siemens, Intel, Mphasis, EMC and Gooru. He has also lead the AI initiative for the “Karnataka Data Lake” project by the Planning Dept of the Govt of Karnataka, to promote data and evidence-based planning and decision-making.

    • My 2006 book (when the Internet was just growing popular in India) speculating on how our collective lives would evolve in a connected world. Predicts a few things like the emergence of alternate money systems, the rise of social media and its impact on politics as well as individual mental health.
  • Theory of Being: Systems Science from a traditional Indian perspective
    • My first attempt to develop a comprehensive theory of complex systems based on Indian concepts of dharma and prana (corresponding to sustainability/resilience, and capability of a system of being). Written in popular style weaving my personal experiences into the narrative. We’re developing the above theory in a more formal way, some of which may be found in the Publications page.
